Greek Day at the Park
On May 20th, Urban Park was transformed into Ancient Greece with Olympic events like chariot racing, running with armor, discus, long jump, and javelin in action at every corner of the park. LAHS teacher Lori Thompson and Mountain Elementary teacher MaryAlice Hawkins collaborated to make this happen. MaryAlice has been doing a Greek Day every year, but this year they wanted to grow the activity and include the students from the LAHS Sports Literature classes. After completing a unit on the Olympics and analyzing “Boys in a Boat” about the 1936 U.S. rowing team, Lori surveyed the students regarding Ancient Olympic events they would like to try. To make all of these learning experiences happen, they needed supplies; that’s where the Foundation stepped in. Through the aid of a Great Ideas Grant, Lori and MaryAlice were able to purchase and create the needed equipment to pull off this event. Lori was excited about about being able to enhance the students’ learning experience of the Olympics in a hands-on, meaningful way. She said, “Since we will be doing the ancient events, students will learn about the history and importance of the Olympics. The Olympics were so important that all wars were stopped during that time. The students will be taught this background information before and during the Greek Day event.” This collaborative event will not only benefit 116 students this year but more students in years to come as they plan to hold this event yearly.
